The Floating House

Project Team Li Han / Hu Yan / Zhang Xintong / Liu Ping

Commissioned by Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, the creation of The Floating House follows the principles of grassroots self-built, utilizing the most common and inexpensive materials along with simple, universally accessible techniques. Built entirely with paper sheets and tape at a 1:1 scale, it recreates an ordinary Suzhou dwelling. The construction process at the atrium of Suzhou Olympic Sports Center Commercial Plaza took three days and involved over 20 participants, using 1,575 sheets of cardstock, more than 1,000 meters of tape, and nearly 100 nylon ropes. Among DAS' projects, this work is the closest in spirit to traditional grassroots construction methods. Though it may appear physically fragile, meeting only the bare necessities of survival, The Flying House represents a personal sanctuary created with limited resources—a symbolic fortress where one can escape societal constraints and embrace spiritual freedom.
